Project 1: Creative Essay: Green Cloud City
Sustainability has been in the mind of various industrial players, and today many architects have explored alternatives for cities, structures, and living spaces that are more environmentally sensitive. Hence, students were tasked to write a creative essay in relation to what sustainable architecture means to us. In a group of 4, we were given the liberty to research and write about relevant topics which are either historical, present, prospective, or the combination of any.
Inspired by the architectural concept used in the fictional movie -Star Wars, we have decided to gear our research towards the futuristic aspect of architecture and sustainability.
We proposed a new city concept that floats among the clouds and relies on renewable energy such as wind and solar power to self-sustain the city. This is in response to the rising sea level which is seen as a threat to coastal nations which are at risk of "sinking", especially low lying islands.
I was able to gain better insights into what sustainable architecture means through the research done in this project, as well as the approaches various architects and construction players have developed to minimize the impacts of humans on the planet. It was a great opportunity to be able to work together with my groupmates and proposed our own solution in relation to this point of discussion.
